1008 Swami Bhawananda Giri Maharaj popularly known as Shri Guru Pitaji Maharaj (formerly Bhawani Prasanna Pyne) was born in the year 1896 in an astute and affluent family of Varanasi. Since childhood he had a great cultural and historic bend which made him famous among his friends and companions. He was God fearing and has great faith in God and also inclined towards pujas and religious activities but at the same time he was apathetic to Sadhus & Saints who were in abundance at Varanasi. He considered them as professional beggars who try to pin point on people’s weaknesses. 1008 Srimat Swami Mahanada Giri Maharaj to whom college owes its name was the saint whom Bhawani’s family often visited which made Bhawani annoyed but an incident which saved the family of Bhawani from ruin miraculously changed his feelings towards the Sadhus and Saints. He also became a fervent follower of Srimat Swami Mahananda Giri Maharaj. Bhawani engrossed so much himself in his Guru that later he was chosen to be the successor of Srimat Swami Mahananda Giri Maharaj. When Bhawani became sanyasi he was known as 1008 Srimat Swami Bhawanada Giri Maharaj ,travelled widely and witnessed poverty, helplessness, suffering of people mainly of the poor and downtrodden. He convicted and translated his motto Seva Hi Param Dharma and in the memory of his beloved Guru established Mahananda Mission in the year 1933. The sanstha’s main aim is to facilitate poor, needy and weaker section of the society by education & health irrespective of caste & creed. The Mission rendered its services like providing free medical aid and social service in Kumbh Melas through its volunteers it also believed in Daridra Narayan Seva . In the year 1936 the college at Ghaziabad came into its being in the form of thatched primary school Shri Guru Pitaji Maharaj did kirtan at different temples to earn money and spent it for the development of the college similarly Smt Ramavati Bhatnagar disposed off her gold ornaments and other valuables to meet out the financial constraints of the school and college, today this thatched primary school is in the form of A grade Post Graduate college with excellent facilities for research and extra curricular activities. Swami Bhawananda Giri Maharaj had dedicated his life for “Bahujan Hitay, Bahujan Sukhay”. He left his mortal coils on 3rd of July,1968 and was given Jalsamadhi in the river Ganga at Garh Mukteshwar (Meerut).
